Air conditioner service cost in Croatia: prices before winter
Your air conditioner cooled the flat all summer, and now it has to heat. If the air it blows is weak or smells, or nobody has looked at the filters for a year, it is time for a service. When you search for air conditioner service cost, you get figures from around 30 to well over 100 euros. The gap is big because one technician's "service" means washing the filters, while another's means deep cleaning and a refrigerant check.
This guide gives you approximate 2026 prices in Croatia for a regular service, a service with a refrigerant check, deep cleaning and a refrigerant top-up. You will also find a real public request, a worked example, what you can do without a technician and why autumn is a good time for a service.

Air conditioner service cost: approximate ranges
These are approximate prices from publicly listed price lists of technicians and portals in Croatia for 2026. They apply to one wall-mounted indoor unit, usually up to about 5.5 kW. Most price lists include VAT, but check this in the quote. For more powerful, ceiling or ducted units, the price is agreed separately.
| Service | What it usually includes | Approximate price |
|---|---|---|
| Regular annual service | cleaning and disinfecting the filters and evaporator, function check | usually about €34–50 |
| Service with refrigerant check | plus refrigerant pressure, outlet air temperature, top-up if needed | about €50–70 |
| Larger or deep service | more thorough cleaning of the indoor unit | about €75 |
| Deep cleaning of the indoor unit | filters, heat exchanger, fan, drip tray and drain | about €90 up to 5.5 kW, about €120 for 5.6–8 kW |
| Refrigerant top-up | per 100 g | about €13–15 |
| Call-out and fault diagnosis | per visit, Zagreb | about €37.50 |
| Technician's hourly rate | when the job is not in the price list | about €62.50 |
Prices also differ between cities. According to a review of price lists published in May 2026, the lowest prices in Zagreb start at around €35, while most technicians charge about €50 for a standard service. In Split it is usually €40–60, and up to €70 with an outdoor unit check. In Rijeka and Osijek a regular service mostly costs €50–60.
A real public request from Sesvete
In May 2026, a request for one air conditioner in Sesvete (Zagreb) was posted on a Croatian request portal: cleaning, washing and a function check. The portal's estimated price for the job was €90–150. That is the portal's estimate for the whole job, not a technician's price list. When you get a quote, check exactly what it includes.
What an air conditioner service includes
A regular service is not the same as washing the filters. With most technicians an air conditioner service includes these steps:
- Inspection of the indoor and outdoor unit. The technician checks the condition of the unit, the brackets and the installation.
- Cleaning and disinfecting the filters. The filters are washed and disinfected.
- Cleaning and disinfecting the evaporator. This is the part of the indoor unit the air flows over. Dust collects on it and forms a layer where microorganisms grow.
- Cleaning the drip tray and condensate drain. A dirty tray can cause bad smells and dripping water.
- Checking the fan and electrical parts. The motors and connections are checked.
- Function check and outlet temperature. The technician measures how warm or cold the air coming out is.
- Refrigerant check. Some technicians include it in the base price, others charge for it separately.
If someone gives you a single price "for a service", ask which of these steps it covers.
Air conditioner cleaning cost: regular service or deep cleaning
A regular service cleans the filters and evaporator, mostly without taking the unit apart. Deep cleaning goes further. The indoor unit is covered with a special service bag and rinsed, together with the fan wheel, the drip tray and the reachable part of the drain.
Air conditioner cleaning cost therefore depends on what is done:
- basic cleaning and disinfection (filters and evaporator): about €50 per unit,
- with extra cleaning of the fan wheel: about €100 per unit with some technicians,
- deep cleaning of a wall unit: about €90 up to 5.5 kW and about €120 for 5.6–8 kW.
Deep cleaning makes sense when the unit smells, when nobody has cleaned it for a long time or when you can see black deposits on the fan. Even then, there is no guarantee that every smell disappears. The source may be the drain or another part of the installation. Cleaning the outdoor unit, repairs and refrigerant are usually charged separately.
Refrigerant top-up: cost and when you really need it
A refrigerant top-up costs roughly €13–15 per 100 g, and less in some price lists. Labour comes on top, because the technician first has to measure the pressure and find the cause.
An air conditioner does not use up refrigerant like fuel. If some is missing, it is usually leaking somewhere. A good technician looks for the leak and repairs it instead of topping up every year.
Working with refrigerant is not a DIY job. Under the Croatian regulation on ozone-depleting substances and fluorinated greenhouse gases (NN 83/2021), leak checks are carried out by a certified technician, who writes a report. Mandatory regular checks apply to units above the legal threshold of 5 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, which for R410A is about 2.4 kg. How much refrigerant your unit holds is shown on the rating plate of the outdoor unit.
Why service your air conditioner before winter
Services are usually done in spring, before the cooling season, or in autumn, before the heating season. If you heat with your air conditioner, it runs for most of the year. That makes autumn a good time to get it ready for winter. If your windows steam up in winter, the dehumidifying mode ("dry") helps too, as explained in our guide condensation on windows.
In winter the outdoor unit matters most. It needs enough free space for air, with no leaves, boxes or laundry around it. The water produced while the unit heats must be able to drain away. Do not wrap the outdoor unit in plastic or cover it with a box while the air conditioner is running, because it needs air.
Air conditioner not heating: what to check first
If your air conditioner is not heating enough, check these points before you call a technician:
- Is heating mode on? On the remote it is usually a sun symbol or "heat".
- Are the filters clean? Dirty filters reduce airflow and heating output.
- Is the outdoor unit clear? Leaves, snow or objects around it reduce output.
- Is the unit defrosting? When it is around zero outside and humid, frost forms on the outdoor unit. The air conditioner briefly stops blowing warm air to melt the ice, and water runs out of the outdoor unit. This is normal.
Call a technician if defrosting happens too often or lasts too long, if thick ice builds up on the outdoor unit and does not melt, or if the unit does not go back to heating afterwards. The same applies to bad smells, water dripping into the room, louder noise or unstable operation.
What you can do without a technician, and what you can't
You can do part of the maintenance yourself. Anything that requires removing the casing or working on the refrigerant should be left to a technician.
| Task | Without a technician | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Washing the indoor unit filters | yes | recommended every few weeks while the unit is in use |
| Wiping dust off the front panel | yes | switch the unit off first |
| Clearing leaves around the outdoor unit | yes | only if the unit is easy and safe to reach |
| Washing the evaporator and fan wheel | no | the casing comes off and there are electrical parts underneath |
| Cleaning the outdoor heat exchanger | no | the fins are easily damaged |
| Checking and topping up refrigerant | no | certified technician only |
Once the casing is off, electrical and electronic parts are exposed. A technician knows how to protect them from water without damaging the unit. That is why a shop-bought spray does not replace a service.
Example: a flat with two air conditioners
This is a made-up example for orientation only. Say your flat has two wall-mounted units up to 5.5 kW. You heat with the one in the living room in winter, and use the bedroom one only for cooling in summer. The living-room unit has not been cleaned for two years and smells.
| Item | Calculation | Approximate |
|---|---|---|
| Deep cleaning of the living-room unit | 1 × about €90 | about €90 |
| Regular service of the bedroom unit | 1 × €34–50 | €34–50 |
| Refrigerant top-up, if needed | e.g. 200 g × €13–15 | €26–30 |
| Total | without repairing a leak | roughly €124–170 |
If the technician finds no refrigerant shortage, you are left with about €124–140. Also ask whether the same price per unit applies when there are two units at the same address.
What to watch for with an air conditioner service
- Ask exactly what the price includes. Filters, evaporator, fan, drain, outdoor unit and refrigerant can all be separate items.
- Check the call-out fee. Some technicians charge separately for the visit and fault diagnosis, especially if you do not order the service in the end.
- Say how powerful the unit is and where it is. More powerful units and hard-to-reach outdoor units cost more. A lift or scaffolding is often not included.
- Do not agree to a refrigerant top-up without a measurement. Measure the pressure first, then decide.
- If the unit is under warranty, read the terms. Some warranties require a regular annual service.
- Ask for an invoice and a service record. Next year you will know what was done.

How to write a good request on Gigron
The clearer you describe your air conditioner, the faster you get comparable quotes. Include:
- how many units you have and where: flat, house, business premises
- the power in kW and the brand, if you know it (it is on the unit's label)
- where the outdoor unit is: balcony, terrace, facade, roof
- when the unit was last serviced
- what you notice: weak heating, smell, dripping, noise
- photos of the indoor and outdoor unit
You will find more tips in our guide how to write a request to a tradesperson.
Example request (made up): "I need a service for two 3.5 kW wall-mounted air conditioners in a third-floor flat. One heats poorly and smells, and the last service was two years ago. The outdoor units are on the balcony and easy to reach. Please send a quote including VAT, with the service, deep cleaning and a possible refrigerant top-up listed separately. Karlovac."

Frequently asked questions
How often should an air conditioner be serviced?
Usually once a year, following the manufacturer's instructions. If you use it for both cooling and heating, it runs for most of the year and may need a service more often. Wash the filters every few weeks while the unit is in use.
Is it normal for the outdoor unit to release water and steam in winter?
Yes, while it is defrosting. The unit briefly stops heating, melts the frost on the outdoor unit and the water drains out. It is a problem if the ice does not melt or if the unit does not go back to heating afterwards.
Can I clean my air conditioner with a spray from the shop?
You can clean the filters and front panel without a technician. A spray for the evaporator does not replace a service, because it does not clean the fan wheel, drip tray and drain. A thorough clean means removing the casing, with electrical parts underneath. That is a job for a technician.
In short: air conditioner service cost in Croatia in 2026 is usually about €34–50 for a regular service and about €50–70 with a refrigerant check. Deep cleaning costs about €90 up to 5.5 kW, and a refrigerant top-up about €13–15 per 100 g. If you heat with your air conditioner, have it serviced in autumn, before the first frost, and ask for an itemised quote.
